We also stopped at Tescos (a local supermarket) and walked around Maynooth centre. We brought the camera, but did not think to use it until we got up against the castle ruin in Maynooth. (7 photos) May 8th, 2004: The BKM (an Intel acronym for “Best Known Method”) for getting vacation time on assignment is to go early, since it can take weeks to get passwords and other computer resources. So that weekend, we headed to Cork, via Waterford. We toured Cork and Cobh - a town just a short train ride from Cork known for the docks from which famine ships left for New York City. (32 photos) May 30th, 2004: A few weeks later we tried another short train trip, from Maynooth to Dublin. (18 photos) June 20th, 2004: We were pretty busy for a month after the Dublin excursion. We had figured out why Erica was covered in welts. She was being eaten by bedbugs - little tick-like insects that are sneaky as cockroaches and leave welts like mosquitoes. I found the seams in the upholstered headboard of her bed full of eggs, nymphs and adults. She had fed them up nicely! We eventually found out that the previous tenant, also an Intel employee on assignment, had noticed (carried in?) the buggers and had the landlord remove the infested bed. After they left, the landlord brought the bed back(!?). When we asked that it be taken out again, we were told we would have to live with it, and work with the professional exterminator that finally had been called. Instead, we packed up. Six carloads moved us to a town on the other side of Leixlip, and by the 20th we were exploring Lucan town centre. (3 photos) June 26th, 2004: This weekend we got ambitious. We spent most of the day touring Powerscourt, one of Ireland's most elegant manors. And we only had to duck one cloudburst. This Benedictine Abbey was established in 1883 by a German Catholic priest, and now includes a beautiful, Aalto-designed library complete with large collection and Internet access! (8 photos) March 11th, 2007: Silver Falls State Park in the Willamette Valley, Oregon. There are 10 major falls from 30 to 178 feet high. We were only able to visit some of them with less than 1 day at the park. Also toured the Tillamook Air Museum. A world-class aircraft collection is housed in an enormous Quonset hut-like building. It was built during WWII.
